It’s not illegal and they’ve explained to you it would be unpaid and the length of time it would be. Sure it’s not the most professional management by the sounds of it but this is legal and completely normal.

Hiya! For trial shifts they would have had to pay you for your 3 hours as thats basically an entire shift. Unpaid trials are legal if its 1 hour or less! If you dont want to reach out directly to them or they havent responded if you have reached out to them I would report to fairwork! 🫶🏽🫶🏽

They are only able to ask you to ‘trial’ for max 1 hour for a retail position. They have to supervise you the whole duration, if they left you alone, then it becomes a paid shift. Definitely you have a right to be paid!!
