Imagine if giraffes were extinct. We accept the existence of giraffes way too easily.

this is a lot of why ginkos make me so horrifically sad. they get by with other pollinators, but they get by. imagine evolving for ages alongside something else, and then in a geologic second you're alone.

If the platypuss was extinct people woud be going crazy over it and being sad that they coud never see it but since it isnt now its just acepted as a thing that lives out there

scientists discovered a tree on mauritius that were all over 300 years old. they then realised its seeds were solely propagated by the dodo. they now manually propagate this tree in the hope of continuing it.
but this makes me thing about what other extinction lines have we inadvertently triggered that are unstoppable.

The glamor of extinction... I have often acknowledged that the kaua'i o'o' is my favorite bird, but it likely would not be if they were still alive. The thing that connected me to them was that lonely song with no answer. I long for a world where it is not my favorite bird, like how to time traveler longs for a future where they did not have to go back to save the world

I find it so bizarre that so many Christian conquerors of the “new world” took the Bible as backing up their manifest destiny and completely glossed over the part where Adam and Eve were set as stewards of the earth to care and protect creation. I had a cs Lewis class that tied that into Lewis’s The weight of glory writing, but people just picked and chose what they wanted to read

It's weird because you'd think it would be an easy concept to understand if you were a shepherd or rancher. if your own collection of animals can die off or be all eaten, why could that not happen at a larger scale?

Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to bring back a wooly mammoth, because we had discovered their fossils and the idea they were all gone seemed impossible.

As Ive gotten older I find myself connected to birds. Some strange thing in me that feels connected to ancient earth life through them. Also, I love my pigeons because theyre the loveliest animals Ive ever met.

I don’t understand why that would be laughable. If you can end somebody’s bloodline by killing like 8 people in a house, doesn’t it just make sense that every other animal could just die out like that too? Lol. Especially since ppl got sick all the time back then. Like they were always Ewing widespread and sudden death so I’m always shocked by how shocking some ideas like this were LOL
