I’m the author of 60+ traditionally published children’s books. Promo is different there. I busted my butt doing school visits (okay, I did get paid for them) and romancing librarians to promote. Lots of stuff I didn’t want to do. I finally burned out a few years ago and retired. But I am 72 so it was time.

See, I’m an excellent writer. But I can’t promote myself for shit, so I don’t even bother trying to write the book. It’s just going to sit on my computer. I can’t do what you do, I have no connections and I SUCK at social media and asking anyone for anything. I don’t know how you do it!

I’m an actor and after 20 years of building my career, doing plays and immersive theater and building my network so I can hear about auditions and projects, working my way up to having an agent and auditioning for commercials every day for a year, had to turn down my first commercial offer because I had to take a job to pay my rent, couldn’t get out of it that day. My agent fired me over it and now I’m out of money anyway. Now I’m going to quit acting and try to get a job at a grocery store. It’s simply not possible to grind to success anymore

I have spent high five figures in actual dollars and about 5000 unpaid hours making and promoting my debut feature film. I got 10k from a distributor which I immediately owed to people who did work for me
