🚨 WAIT A MINUTE… I Thought They Said These Children Never Went to School? One of the biggest developments in the Siders case has nothing to do with a new criminal charge. It has to do with the story many of us were told during the first few days of this investigation. When this case first became national news, public officials described the children as “almost feral” and compared their condition to children growing up in a third-world country. Those statements—and the media coverage that followed—left many people with the impression that these children had never attended school, had been completely isolated from society, and were virtually unknown to any government agency. Now, newly unsealed court records are painting a more complicated picture. According to records reviewed by the Columbus Dispatch, six of the Siders children were enrolled at Addaville Elementary School in Gallia County. The records also reportedly show that truancy complaints were filed in Gallia County Juvenile Court in 2021 after the children stopped attending school. According to the reporting, those cases never moved forward because court officials were unable to locate Gary and Elizabeth Siders to serve them with the required court summonses. If that’s accurate, it means there was already a paper trail. The children were not completely unknown to the education system. The juvenile court system had already become involved. Which raises a completely different question… How did that trail go cold? This is exactly why I’m cautious about accepting the first public narrative in any major criminal case. I’m not saying investigators intentionally misled the public. I’m saying that early public statements carry enormous weight, and when additional court records are later unsealed, they sometimes reveal a more complete—and sometimes different—picture than what the public first understood. To be clear… Nothing in these court records changes the seriousness of the criminal allegations if they are proven in court. Nothing excuses the conditions investigators say they found inside that home. But I do believe these records challenge part of the initial public understanding of the case. The court of public opinion is often formed within the first 48 hours of a major investigation. Court records, sworn testimony, and documented timelines usually don’t emerge until weeks or months later. By then, most people have already decided what they believe. That’s why I continue to revisit these cases as new information becomes available. 💬 What do you think? Should public officials be more cautious about how they characterize a case during the earliest stages of an investigation, knowing those statements can shape public opinion long before all the evidence is available? Or do you think it’s simply part of investigating a rapidly developing case? ⸻ 🏡 Mortgage Loan Officer by day.
