While Naija Confra commends Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for his firm approach to cult-related violence and the recent renunciation exercise, we believe important concerns remain. Although all cultists were asked to renounce their affiliations, certain prominent active cultists, including people close to the Governor and those holding national leadership positions in cult groups, were notably absent. The Edo State APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, is an active NBM/Aye/Black Axe cultist, and there are unconfirmed recent reports alleging that he used cultism to thre@ten some individuals. Apart from Jarret Tenebe, the National/Overall Cult Leaders of 4 major dang£rous cult groups are linked to Edo State: Eiye (ACN), led by Odia Eromosele; Maphite (GCAI), led by Nester Iguodala; Jurist (PLIJ), led by Ozigi Thunder; and one faction of Aye (NBM), led by Hope Aliyu. These are individuals who contribute to the growth of cultism through sponsorship, initiations, and other cult activities. If these people renounce, a lot of people will truly renounce. While Naija Confra supports non-violence and renunciation, we want to see a process that earns public trust and encourages even those who remain skeptical to participate in future exercises. Lastly, past renunciation events have raised concerns about whether the events were political, whether participants genuinely abandon cult activities, or whether such gatherings could expose people to future attacks. In one previous case, an individual who renounced cultism later became the National Elder of the cult group he renounced. Renunciation is only the beginning - sustained monitoring, genuine disengagement, accountability, and practical support are essential for lasting change. We hope Edo State will build on its current efforts with more credible and inclusive exercises that reach those involved in cultism, regardless of their status or connections. God bless Edo State. Reject Cultism.
