On the evening of June 7, 2017, 10-year-old Kiaya Campbell was living in Thornton, Colorado, with her father and his family. Her father was in a relationship with Aidan Zellmer’s mother. Kiaya referred to him as her “brother”. That evening, Kiaya and Aidan left the house together to walk to a nearby store. According to Aidan’s initial account to police, the two went to a store intending to steal Pokémon cards, but the cards were locked up. Aidan claimed it began to rain while they were walking back, he turned around and realized Kiaya was gone. He said he searched for her but could not find her. Kiaya’s family reported her missing. Police began searching the surrounding neighborhoods. Eventually Aidan was found walking alone. Investigators questioned Aidan about what had happened. His explanation raised concerns, and surveillance footage reportedly contradicted portions of his account. An AMBER Alert was issued for Kiaya. That afternoon her body was found. The medical examiner determined that Kiaya had d*ed from blunt-force trauma to the head. Investigators reported that she had been struck repeatedly with a metal pipe and had defensive wounds. According to court reporting, Aidan’s clothing and shoes were collected for forensic testing, and a preliminary examination detected bl00d on both shoes. Aidan was interviewed by police during the investigation. Reports say he continued to deny k*lling Kiaya and maintained that they had become separated. When investigators informed him that Kiaya’s body had been found, he reportedly became extremely emotional. According to an affidavit described in news coverage, he also said he had left her because she was being annoying. Police arrested him on June 10, 2017, on suspicion of first-degree m*rder. Aidan, then 17, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.#criminal #truecrime #investigation #mystery #criminaljustice
