Providence, R.I. – October 24, 2026 HISTORIC PROVIDENCE THEATER DEMOLISHED Demolition crews worked Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, October 20–21, tearing down the former Rialto Theatre on Mathewson Street in downtown Providence. The historic property, whose origins date to 1829, was approved for an emergency demolition after city officials determined the deteriorating structure posed an imminent public safety hazard. According to reporting by The Boston Globe, the building originally served as Westminster Congregational Church before becoming a skating rink in 1906 and later a venue for vaudeville performances and early motion pictures. In October 1919, it reopened as the Rialto Theatre, featuring a 1,500-seat auditorium, a specially designed $18,000 pipe organ, and advanced movie projection technology for its time. The building eventually transitioned into commercial storefronts and offices before falling into disrepair. Following a September 29 inspection, Providence officials determined the building was structurally unsound and at risk of collapse. Inspectors identified significant roof deterioration and standing water in the basement. The Providence Preservation Society questioned whether demolition was necessary, advocating for greater consideration of preserving and repurposing historic buildings. Developer Joseph R. Paolino Jr., whose company co-owned the property, told The Boston Globe the site is planned to become a parking lot potentially purchased by the neighboring Hotel Providence. #providence #rhodeisland #historicaltheater #demolition
