An unusual case from Waghasiya village in Gujarat's Morbi district has come to light, where two friends allegedly constructed an unauthorized toll plaza to siphon off approximately Rs 75 crore over 18 months. By demolishing parts of a closed ceramic factory on private land, the duo built a secret bypass road right beside the official National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Waghasiya Toll Plaza on the Bamanbore-Kutch National Highway. The story has drawn widespread attention across social media platforms for the sheer scale of the operation. To lure commuters away from the main highway, the operators charged Rs 300 instead of the standard Rs 500 to Rs 600 official toll fee. They set up proper booth intrastructure, deployed staft in unitorms, and even printed fake toll receipts so drivers would not suspect any wrongdoing. Because of the discounted rates, heavy vehicles and regular commuters steadily diverted onto the private road, allowing the illegal setup to run unnoticed for a year and a half. The operation was eventually uncovered after officials noticed a sharp drop in traffic reaching the main NHAI toll plaza despite vehicles entering the highway. Following a complaint to the District Collector, authorities conducted an aerial drone survey that exposed the illegal bypass road and private toll booths.
