Scientists from Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates have developed a way to strengthen sand using natural fibers produced by microorganisms. In laboratory tests, thin sheets of bacterial cellulose placed between layers of sand reduced water permeability by 28 times compared with untreated sand. The research involved Empa, Khalifa University and ETH Zurich. The team also tested microorganisms that grow directly in sand, producing fibers that bind sand grains together. This method reduced water permeability by up to six times. In a separate test, sand treated with fibers grown among its grains showed an increase in water-holding capacity from about 20.2% to 25.5%. The researchers say the technology could eventually help stabilize sandy soil and support efforts to restore degraded land. However, the results come from laboratory experiments, and further testing is needed to determine how well the material performs in real desert conditions.
