Never assume that the person someone is today is the person they'll always be. You might know someone who has spent years making terrible decisions. Someone who has neglected their salah, fallen into bad habits or lived a life completely disconnected from Allah. And because you've known them that way for so long, you struggle to imagine them ever changing. But people do change. Someone who spent years away from their religion can become deeply committed to their faith. Someone who made mistakes they're ashamed of can sincerely repent and spend the rest of their life trying to do better. And someone you once looked down upon could become far closer to Allah than you. I think this is something we need to be very careful about. Because when you're trying to practise your religion, it's easy to forget that the guidance you're enjoying today is itself a blessing from Allah. It isn't something you achieved entirely through your own efforts. And it certainly doesn't give you the right to look down on somebody who's struggling. The same heart that Allah has guided towards goodness can also change. Which is why we should never become arrogant about where we are in our relationship with Him. And if you're someone who feels ashamed of your past, or you're struggling with things you desperately want to change, please don't convince yourself that you've gone too far to turn things around. You might have wasted years of your life. You might have made decisions you deeply regret. You might have fallen into the same sins repeatedly. But as long as you're alive, the opportunity to sincerely repent and return to Allah is still there. Never look at someone else's past and assume you know their future. And never look at your own past and assume your future has already been decided. None of us knows the state in which we'll meet Allah. What matters is that we keep turning back to Him and striving to finish our lives in a state that pleases Him.
