Homes during the communist era in Albania were defined by absolute standardization: almost every family lived in similar, state-assigned spaces with nearly identical furniture. State-Assigned Housing: Private property did not exist. The regime allocated apartments—usually in brick or prefabricated concrete blocks (pallat)—based on family size and political standing. Multi-Functional Living Rooms: Apartments were small (around 50–60 m²). The living room served as a reception area during the day and converted into a bedroom for children or grandparents at night. Identical Interiors: Almost every living room featured the exact same wooden wall unit (bufeja), stiff couches, heavy rugs, and handmade lace doilies (milot) covering the TV or radio. Utilities & Heating: Homes were heated using wood or kerosene stoves (soba me vajguri). Running water was provided on a strict schedule, making large plastic storage tanks or buckets a necessity in every bathroom.
