@vaticanupdate: A Catholic bishop turns seventy five. And Canon Law requires him to submit his resignation to the Pope. Not request it. Submit it. Mandatory. 🙏 But what happens next is more theologically interesting than most Catholics realize. The Pope can ask him to remain in office while a successor is found. Sometimes for months. Sometimes years. When the Pope finally accepts — the bishop becomes Bishop Emeritus of his diocese. Emeritus meaning — he held this office. He served here. This was his. And here is what never changes. His episcopal consecration. The indelible character imprinted on his soul at the laying on of hands. That never retires. That never ends. A bishop emeritus remains a bishop. Fully. Completely. Permanently. He can still confirm. Still ordain. Still celebrate Mass. Still preach. He has retired from the governance of a diocese. He has not retired from the episcopate. And when he dies — he is buried as a bishop. With full episcopal rites. ⛪ The office ends. The bishop does not. Watch till the end. 👇 SEO Keywords: What happens when Catholic bishop retires, bishop emeritus Catholic explained, Canon Law bishop resignation at 75, episcopal resignation Catholic, bishop retirement Catholic explained, indelible character bishop Catholic, bishop emeritus still a bishop Catholic, Catholic bishop death rites, Catholic faith explained simply, episcopal ordination permanent Catholic Hashtags: #catholicchurch #catholictiktok #bishop #emeritus #retirement
