Last fall I went up to Nova Scotia for the cutting of the Christmas tree the province sends Boston every year. In 1917, two ships collided in Halifax Harbour and the blast tore through the city, killing nearly 2,000 people. Within a day, Boston had a relief train of doctors and supplies headed north. Nova Scotia has sent this thank you tree for 50 years. They even sent it again last fall, after months of 51st-state taunts and tariff fights. Neighbors squabble. Families squabble. It’s never been a reason to ignore someone who needs help. Not everything should come with a dollar figure. You don’t respond to a neighbor’s crisis with the threat of an invoice. You just help. Enjoy the day. Maude and I kept this walk short (I have asthma).
