Everybody wanted Javon’s words—but who was protecting Javon? During our live, Javon’s grandmother made another serious allegation. She says TMZ interviewed her grandson and published that interview without the family’s permission. Javon was only 17 years old. She also says he was never paid. Now, let’s be precise: An interview subject is not automatically entitled to payment, and whether parental permission was legally required depends on how and where the interview occurred. But legality is not the only question. Journalism also carries an ethical responsibility—especially when the person being interviewed is a minor connected to the unexplained death of his friend. Who contacted Javon? Did the interviewer know he was 17? Was a parent or guardian notified? Did anyone explain where his words, face and name would appear? Was the interview edited, and was Javon given an opportunity to correct anything? Most importantly, did the adults involved consider the pressure this teenager was already under? Javon was not a trained spokesperson. He was a child navigating grief, public suspicion and an investigation that had already attracted national attention. His words could shape the entire narrative—and follow him for years. This is why his grandmother’s statement matters. She is not only disputing what others claim Javon witnessed; she is telling the public to stop using her grandson as a shield for competing versions of this story. Leave him alone does not mean ignore what he knows. It means approach him responsibly. Verify his account. Protect his rights. Do not twist his words, pressure him or speak for him. And to TMZ, these are fair questions: What was the date of the interview? Who arranged it? What consent was obtained? What did Javon actually say before editing? Will you release the complete, unedited interview so the public can hear his words in context? We are not declaring that anyone broke the law. We are demanding transparency about how a 17-year-old became part of a national media story without his family’s knowledge, according to his grandmother. Everybody wanted content. Everybody wanted a headline. But who was protecting the child? Free Press Action Network.
