@melissaskavinska: Russian figure skating vs the international stage Russia has long been known for pushing technical difficulty, particularly jumps. But international judging increasingly demands the full package skating skills, spins, steps, performance and technique. I’m Melisa, founder of Inside Artistic Sports where I go beyond the headlines to explain the systems and stories behind Russian figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics. Want to understand it deeper? They still adapt very well though… just look at the challengers results… russian skaters are still one of the most dominant federation in the world

russian skaters have artistry too; they are true full package.they are some of the most captivating figure skaters, especially in singles. they will do everything they can to make sure you remember them and are still thinking about them even an hour after their performance

it's primarily a sport though. they should just split into two categories maybe one focused more on artisty and second on technical elements jumps etc

I don’t think Russian skaters lack artistry. Zepka, whom I adore, embodies exactly the kind of artistic skating I’ve always sought.
However, many Russian skaters take too long a run-up to land their numerous quadruple jumps and triple Axels. I think this is why they’re often criticized for lacking artistry.
I also think trends in pairs skating have shifted over the past four years. Previously, as was the case with many Russian skaters, difficult lifts and quadruple jumps were what earned the highest marks. However, over the past four years, the Japanese and Canadian pairs that have won the World Championships—unlike their Russian counterparts—have not only refined the female skater’s performance but have also come to demand high-quality skating from the male skater as well. In fact, many Russian pairs are struggling to consistently achieve Level 4 or high GOE scores in their step sequences.

The ISU is controlled by Europe. They can't stand seeing 'their' medals taken by Russia. When jumps are emphasized, Russia win. Now they switch to artistry. Russia will win too. Shcherbakova has top artistry and won all the big Gold. The latest crop of Russians also have big artistry. This apply to singles, pairs and ice dance.
