@mind_yourboundaries: First of all, there’s NOTHING wrong with a mom wanting pictures with just her adult kids. I’d want them too, BUT I’d also take pictures with everybody’s spouses. What I’m REALLY curious about is what’s going on underneath this. Does this mom still see herself as the person IN CHARGE of the whole family, even though her son is an adult and has a family of his own? 🤔 And the part I can’t get over is when she says she’s going to DOUBLE-CHECK with her son. That makes me SUPER curious about their relationship. Is she used to going to him when she doesn’t get the answer she wants? And if she does, how does he respond? But then there’s something else… The daughter-in-law responds by saying her husband and child won’t be coming to the pictures. But did she ACTUALLY have that conversation with her husband first so they could make the decision together? OR did she decide for him (just like her MIL is deciding for the family)? Kinda interesting right?? Now we have TWO people potentially making decisions for this grown man without including him! And listen, total transparency I would have seen 🔴 if my MIL told me she’d be talking with my husband to in attempts to override me. BUT I would have NEVER engaged in this conversation. Once she said, “you never know how long people will be in the family,” I would have left it alone and talked with my husband when he got home. Then together we’d make our decision and he’d communicate OUR decision to his mom. Aren’t you curious about what HE thinks and how HE would handle this, because at the end of the day, this isn’t about family pictures… It’s about whether everyone recognizes that he’s an adult who has his own family and together with his wife they make decisions that affect THEIR family. If you were the husband how would you respond to your mom? Story Credit: @jadablue999 (original creator). Unverified; may be dramatized. You can take a few different kinds of photos involving everyone, just the kids and parents, the grandkids, etc.

Here’s the message I’d send to my mom if I’m this husband (using The CLEAR Formula): Hey Mom! We’d love to be there Sunday, and I know these family pictures are important to you. We just want to make sure spouses are included in at least some of the photos since they're family too. They certainly don't need to be in every picture! I wanted to make sure we're on the same page ahead of time so there's no awkwardness or hurt feelings on Sunday. If that works for you, just drop off three matching shirts. Jada wears a medium. Thanks! Love you, Mom!

She can “want pictures” all she wants but that doesn’t mean she gets them. Boundaries up, contact low.

I would definitely feel a bit taken aback and upset about the whole situation. But I firstly I would talk to my husband about it because if he wants to be part of the photo I wouldn’t stand in his way. But I‘m pretty sure my husband would want to be part of a picture without the whole family.

I can see her wanting a photo of her and her children, but then you take different combinations of family in the photos (write a list). That way every family can buy the photos they specifically want. Also, bring changes of clothing if you want.

Blood relatives of whom? Because you’re a blood relative of your child the same she’s a blood relative of her own son … you’re literally just as related to the family as she is 💀

I’ve never minded my mother-in-law, wanting a picture with her sons without me in it. But that’s also not where the photos end, we take group pictures and then each Son‘s families picture. Why do some MIL have to be so difficult.🙄

I don’t understand this. You can do a photoshoot with everyone and do multiple combinations of people. Why do you have to completely leave out someone?

😂 Sounds just like my MIL, you have to have the “FAMILY NAME “blood running through your veins to be considered part of her family for pictures, vacations or holidays.

That is weird. It is totally fine to do pictures of just the parents and their kids without spouses, in addition to the big family photos. Having the spouses show up, not be in any photos, and then tell the spouses it’s because some of them may not be around long-term is really off-putting and I wouldn’t want to go either.

I think it would be reasonable to want at least one or two shots of MIL, her partner and their children (the OG family photo) but there is no world where it makes sense to include the grandkids and not include their kids' spouses. That is half of the grandkids' family and the MEL'S joke is fucking insulting and wrong. Her kids better be standing up for their spouses.

OK, it’s not pictures, but it does deal with family traditions around holidays. I have Christmas ornaments that have all my kids names and myself on there since they were tiny. My son is 26 and he recently got engaged to his girlfriend who also has a son from a previous relationship. I wanted to continue our tradition of having our family Christmas ornament with me and the kids. I got the ornament like I normally do, but I also got a second ornament that had my son and his fiancé and her son on it. We just added a separate one. I think it’s perfectly lovely if you want to have a family picture with just your kids or your “blood relatives“. However, there’s no reason you can’t have that as well as pictures with everyone in it. I just don’t understand why it has to be one way or the other. Why can you not do both?

It's fine to want the photos, but you can't just exclude the spouses. You can set up the photos and ask for one in the session that's just with your children or grandchildren but that's so rude to say daughter in law can't come.

It’s normal to take pics of everyone together and then take shots of different people in smaller groups . Excluding someone is never ok . If a family member told me they wanted to exclude someone from my immediate family I’d say ok have fun taking pics, but I’m out .

My mother in law would never do this, but my petty butt would say “fine.” And then do nothing to help pick out outfits for my kids or get them ready, and then go spend a day by myself while his family deals with my two toddlers 😆

Then my child doesn’t need to be in them either. If I’m not family neither is my child. I wouldn’t deal with people like that at this point in my life.

That video that went around last year about the woman who didn't want her children's spouses going on a family vacation. My mom got angry at that woman. She'd be angry hearing this story. Then, both of her children-in-love, as she calls them, have sadly lost their moms. If we were catholic, she'd light a candle for them everyday. Instead, she just sees it as a sworn oath to love them with a fierceness that tells those souls their babies are cared for daily.

I’m maybe ok if she wants a picture with just her offspring but as soon as grandchildren are included then so are the parents of those grandchildren.

The correct thing to do is a whole family photo, then parents with kids and grandkids. Not hard. She just wanted to stir up a storm!
