@nerdsip_merica: The Holland Tunnel runs about 8,500 feet under the Hudson between Jersey City and Lower Manhattan in twin tubes. It opened on November 13, 1927, and more than 52,000 vehicles drove through on the first day. Each tube has a fresh-air duct under the roadway and an exhaust duct above the ceiling. Four ventilation buildings, two on land and two standing in the river, hold 42 blowing fans and 42 exhaust fans. At full speed they can replace all the air in the tunnel every 90 seconds. Today two fans per duct cover peak traffic and the third is a backup. The design came from tests run mainly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, including exhaust measurements in its experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. ASME named the system a mechanical engineering landmark in 1984. The image is an illustration, not a photo. Which other American tunnel do you think needs the most ventilation?
