In order to fix your issues with dating as a woman with ADHD, you have to realize that, as human beings, we first begin making a model of what relationships are supposed to look like as early as childhood. So when, in your earliest stages of development—and often throughout later stages of development—you have been missed for your true self and expected to be something else, then of course you may enter relationships anticipating a level of difficulty that your nervous system has become more familiar with. Emotional investment from others can feel scary, while distance can feel safer because you have learned to experience yourself as a burden. Emotional distance can even become appealing because part of you wants to bridge the gap between you and what you never received earlier in life. ADHD can then intensify these patterns. Hyperfocus can leave you mentally consumed by one person, while impulsivity and difficulty shifting attention can increase the urge to pursue someone who feels emotionally far away. This can lead to repeated experiences of rejection that reinforce the painful belief that you are “too much.” Healing requires you to undo this pattern. It means identifying the beliefs you have developed around attachment, closeness, rejection, and your own worth—and gradually replacing them with healthier core beliefs through new relational experiences. Ideally, this happens within a safe therapeutic space where your nervous system can begin learning that closeness does not always have to come with uncertainty, pursuit, or rejection.
