@avelanhealth: There is a narrow window where gathering the right paperwork from a parent is simple, and once it closes, it gets a lot harder and more expensive. Most of these documents need your parent's signature, which means they have to be done while your parent still has the capacity to sign them. If that window passes, the only path left is usually court guardianship, which often runs several thousand dollars and can take six months or longer, depending on your state. A few worth knowing. A durable financial power of attorney and a healthcare proxy are different documents that cover different decisions. Medicare will not act on a power of attorney alone. It requires its own form, CMS 1696. And a copy of the will is often not enough. Most states require the original. This is not a conversation anyone looks forward to, but having it early, while everyone is healthy and able to plan, makes everything easier later. Save this list and start the conversation with your parents while there is time. 📌 Save this for reference.
