@darianquanai: I’ve noticed something in the cultural landscape over the past couple of years: this weird seeking of external validation when it comes to Black women’s desirability. Whether it’s a Black woman doing a movie press run, an album rollout, or simply interacting with a man, there seems to be this constant need to prove, “Look! She’s desired! She’s wanted!” And I think it’s doing the exact opposite of what people believe it’s doing. I understand where it comes from. Years of symbolic annihilation, declining media representation, colorism, and the continued positioning of Black women, especially dark-skinned Black women, at the bottom of society’s hierarchy of desirability. Even in 2026, we’re seeing how rarely dark-skinned Black women are centered as romantic leads in mainstream film and television. We saw the reaction to Sinners, with people seemingly enamored and surprised at the idea of a dark-skinned Black woman being portrayed as a sex symbol opposite Michael B. Jordan. And I don’t necessarily believe this is generational. You can see it among Millennials, Gen Z, Gen X, and Boomers. But here’s the contradiction: When we excessively celebrate men for finding Black women attractive or treating us well, we’re reinforcing the idea that loving a Black woman is somehow extraordinary. A man holding a door open, making eye contact, listening when a Black woman speaks, or simply being kind is not necessarily romantic interest. It’s basic human decency. Yet we’re turning these ordinary interactions into evidence that Black women are desirable. And in doing so, we’re putting men on pedestals for doing absolutely nothing extraordinary, while positioning Black women as people who should be grateful to have been chosen. That’s internalized oppression. You can consciously reject a hierarchy while unconsciously reinforcing it through your behavior. And I want us to stop. Because from our hair to our skin, our nails, the way we speak, what we create, and the culture we influence, we are the shit. We don’t need somebody else’s attraction, approval, or attention to validate our desirability. We don’t need to keep proving that Black women are desirable. We already know we are. #blackwomen #beautystandard #socialcommentary #darianquanai #fyp

I feel this is apart of black women also feeling the need to get in non black men comments and asking them if they like black women. I hate it. The world treats us as if we’re undesirable and subconsciously we believe it.

At the root of this problem is male centeredness. It still doesn’t make sense that what these men say they want has so much negative impact on BW. Imagine caring what Lil Wayne says he admires.

Even when Pharrell made his video for “frontin”, people were acting like the dark skin girl in the video was revolutionary. Like, he was getting praise for such a “bold” move😅

This was a while word. Basically we are so starved for representation that we celebrate crumbs. And you’re right, more people need to be conscious about the media they consume. Black trauma, mammmying, the fat girl can only be the funny friend, etc.

Even when we get monoracial black women representation other black women will tear her down if she doesn’t have the “right” features they think non-black people will find attractive.
