@thepottymouthguru: Taking a break during an argument is a great start. But what the fuck are you actually DOING during that break? Because if you’re spending 30 minutes replaying everything your partner said, building your case, and rehearsing your comeback, you might be keeping yourself just as activated as when you walked away. Here’s what to practice instead: 1. Interrupt the mental argument. Notice when you’re replaying the conversation. Remind yourself: I don’t need to figure everything out right now. I need to get myself into a better place to have this conversation. 2. Check in with your body. Notice your jaw, shoulders, chest, breathing, and any urge to move or react. You can’t work with what you’re not noticing. 3. Help your body settle. Try slow breathing with a longer exhale, gentle walking, stretching, cool water on your face, or soothing rhythmic movement. Pay attention to what actually helps YOU feel less activated. 4. Don’t confuse regulation with feeling nothing. You can still be angry, hurt, or frustrated. The goal is to have enough capacity to choose how you respond instead of automatically reacting. And remember: A break isn’t an escape from the conversation. Agree on when you’ll return, and use that time to prepare yourself to engage differently. Knowing you SHOULD take a break is the WHAT. Learning how to actually USE that break is the HOW. What’s your biggest struggle during a break: calming your body or stopping the argument in your head? Part 2 is coming! ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #EmotionalRegulation #RelationshipSkills #AttachmentStyles

The Pottymouth Guru :
Taking a break is only half the skill. What you do during that break matters! Are you actually helping yourself regulate, or are you spending the whole time having the same fucking argument in your head? And remember, the goal isn’t to stop feeling upset. It’s to get to a place where you can feel upset AND respond differently. ❤️🤟🏻🌿

grsnted may be differnt in partner relationships, but i inly have friend and amfamily relationships as a temllate givsn never been in romantic relationship. for me I spiral i do the arguments counter arguments anger the defensivness, freak out, like I having the argument then it transitions to how they see it. then I start. making guess and thinking about why they viewed it that way, until finally I have a bunch of guesses. then acceptance of my feelings, granted takes longer than 30 mins, but when i come back in still tense but im not as reactive.

@The Pottymouth Guru: Research supports the potential benefits of working with the body’s defensive stress responses. Payne, Levine & Crane-Godreau (2015) proposed that interrupted fight-or-flight responses may contribute to ongoing physiological activation and that movement, bodily awareness, and imagery may help resolve these responses. Brom et al. (2017) found significant reductions in PTSD and depressive symptoms following Somatic Experiencing therapy. Andersen et al. (2017) also found improvements in PTSD symptoms and fear of movement. These findings support somatic approaches, although the specific mechanism of “completing the stress cycle” has not yet been experimentally established.

I use philosophy that is my secret eastern philosophy More specifically the I find when I talk to professionals it doesn’t seem to go over well with them because they can only go over what they learned in their profession and I’m asking more of them than they’re willing to talk about because it’s probably two nuance, but to your point when I was in therapy, we didn’t really set a time we talked about even an object behind so that you’d come back to the conversation and saying about how much time you need
