@everymovieeverpodcast: TRAINSPOTTING WAS SO BIG IT SOMEHOW ENDED UP IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION By 1996, Trainspotting had escaped the cinema completely. Danny Boyle and Irvine Welsh had made this filthy, funny, furious little British film about heroin and Edinburgh, and somehow it had become a cultural event big enough to get dragged into an American presidential campaign. Bob Dole publicly went after Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction for supposedly romanticising heroin. Small problem: he hadn’t actually seen either of them. Which is a tremendous way to review a film, and one we intend to adopt immediately. Obviously, we do not genuinely believe Trainspotting cost Bob Dole the presidency. There may have been one or two other factors involved. Possibly even some which remain in a filing cabinet somewhere. But there is something brilliant about cinema wandering into places it has absolutely no business being. Elections. Parliament. Moral panics. Newspaper front pages. A film stops being just a film when everybody starts using it to argue about the world around them. And for a brief moment in 1996, Trainspotting was fucking everywhere. Like a certain dead guy.
