@wilgoren: LIFE IS STRANGE AND AMAZING: sitting through the pouring rain waiting for My Chemical Romance with Alicia and in the middle of the Hollywood Bowl she says, “I think those are Gerard Way’s parents.” Gerard is lead singer of MCR. So she looks up a photo and they sure look like they could be. The rain slowly stops. The couple walks by again and I say, “Excuse me, are you Gerard’s parents?” And the dad says yes! The rain has stopped but so many people had trouble getting into the Hollywood Bowl that they announce the show is being delayed nearly an hour. So we had time to kill. So now the dad, Don Way turns to us and says “How did you know it was us?” This was all Alicia. But it kindled this conversation now with the dad of the lead singer and bassist of the band which lasted at least half an hour. We talked about them being from New Jersey and how I was from outside Boston.. and how they have relatives in the great town of Norwood Massachusetts and how my dad taught there in Norwood. We talked about The Black Parade and how it was inspired in part by Don taking his kids to the Macy’s Parade in New York. We talked about his time in the military, how 9/11 was a turning point for Gerard to focus on music. We spoke about the first gigs with just a few people and now gigs at Wembley Stadium with 90,000 people. We spoke about Alicia and how she is doing her college thesis on the fandom of My Chemical Romance. Don was really interested in that too. What a cool moment. All because of the rain and the rain delay and Alicia who spotted the parents in the middle of the crowd. By the way, Gerard and Mikey’s dad says of MCR, “Wait’ll you hear the NEW stuff they’re working on.” As for the show.. it was brilliant, an epic rock opera on the legendary stage of the Hollywood Bowl. They’re playing four more nights.
