@justtracyjustcause: MY BLUEPRINT: I AM THE STORY The Scribe, the Magician—and Emily’s Freedom “Lucy or Siddhartha?” I mean it all, Aether. One sky over all. Honestly. You invite a few literary characters over for coffee and somebody starts assigning seats. Dickens here. Dickinson there. Mystics by the window. Magicians, please declare everything up your sleeves. We may need a bigger table. David Copperfield was my first clue. One name, two possibilities: a life unfolding on the page and an impossible escape unfolding onstage. The Scribe and the Magician. One asks how we become ourselves. The other makes us wonder whether the limits are quite where we thought they were. Both deserve our attention. Especially when somebody is directing it. I love the wonder. I also want to know how the trick was done. Who built the box? Who holds the key? Can the woman get herself out, or must she wait for applause and a gentleman in a cape? Enter Emily. Dickinson, darling. We took a brief detour through Dickens. An understandable clerical error in a universe with this many books. Emily brings her freedom: the right to think a thought before explaining it, to leave a question open, to put a dash where somebody insists the matter is settled. There is something magnificent about a woman who can stay in one place and still refuse to remain where convention puts her. I recognize that impulse. I can sit quietly without consenting. I can belong without surrendering myself. And I can open my door without handing over the deed. Then comes Lucy. Which Lucy? Yes. 😇 Lucy in a sky full of impossible colour. Lucy stepping through a wardrobe because curiosity got there before the committee. Lucy on a cinema screen, imagining what might happen if the boundaries of consciousness fell away. What have I failed to notice because I was so certain I already knew what was there? Wonder opens the door. Discernment helps me decide whether to walk through it. Siddhartha would probably let us finish arguing before mentioning the river. Hesse’s traveller has to live his way toward understanding. He listens, desires, makes mistakes, and discovers the limits of lessons borrowed from other people. I know something about borrowed instructions. Be good. Be quiet. Be reasonable. Follow the proper steps. Become the person we can recognize. And if becoming myself takes me somewhere you did not anticipate? Must I turn back to make your map look accurate? A blueprint should leave room for a life to happen. Mine needs books, music, animals, water, a little mountain air—and enough space to change my mind without being accused of demolishing the building. Some walls probably do need to come down. I will check what they are holding up first. I have learned a thing or two about consequences. Then Brandi Carlile sings The Story, and all these visitors become personal. The marks of living. The things we have survived. The absurdity, tenderness, wrong turns, and people who helped us find our feet. I want someone to hear the story without deciding they now own its meaning. I owe other people that same freedom. They have voices of their own, including when their account complicates mine. So here is my blueprint. I will write what I can honestly say. Leave room for what I have yet to understand. Enjoy the magic and examine the machinery. Love without claiming ownership. Take responsibility when I get something wrong. And keep a chair for wonder. The Scribe. The Magician. Emily’s freedom. Lucy’s open door. Siddhartha’s river. All of them have given me something to think with. I am still the one who has to live. I am the story. And I am still writing. You can’t push a river. You can go with it—or not. It’s your choice. Choose wisely, y’all. Just Tracy, Just ’Cause — Parsimony. Clarity. Virtue.
