She is the heartbeat of the film. It doesn't work without her. Jack's great but he's so over time top, you wouldn't buy it for a second if she wasn't reacting to him. Its a masterclass in scene sparing. She never got the respect she deserved. Kubrick was a genius but also a prick.

I don’t know if we have really dissected her character in the movie as much as we should have. Shelly was playing an abused spouse who was throughout the movie trying to protect her son. In all of her scenes we see the abuse spouse and how she constantly walks on eggshells for Jack. I think seeing this in movies at the time was too early for society and only now we feel comfortable to discuss such things.

She didn’t get enough mention for getting fully into character. One of my first on screen female crushes was on her. I saw the movie waaaaaay too young and this beautiful lady was suffering to save her kid. Her pain is so obviously real.
