@carolinejhingory: What happens when the people you expect to hold local leaders accountable have no political reason to rescue your community? That is the question that keeps bothering me about Prince George’s County. I cannot prove that Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is deliberately standing back, and I am not presenting that suspicion as a finding. But residents should think carefully about how much hope they are placing in federal intervention while demanding so little from the people with power over their county right now. County Council Chair Krystal Oriadha and Janna Parker should face public scrutiny over the taxpayer money entrusted to Parker’s organization regardless of whether a federal investigation ever comes. An arrest cannot be the threshold for asking where the money went. By the time a criminal case reaches a courtroom, residents may already be living with consequences that a conviction cannot undo. And this is where political loyalty becomes expensive. Some people are so determined to deny Trump a talking point about Black leadership that they will discourage the very scrutiny that could protect a Black community. You cannot preserve Prince George’s County’s reputation by teaching its residents to tolerate unanswered questions. A reputation cannot fund a school, sustain a household or restore money that should have served the public. Black prosperity took generations of work to build. The people living on those foundations have every right to demand receipts before another dollar leaves the account. If Washington never steps in, what are county residents supposed to do?
