A Malaysian mother's final call with her 19-year-old daughter lasted just 17 seconds before the teen and her younger sister, 14, died in a house fire in Perak on Oct. 16. The sisters, Kiong Lee Yi, 19, and Kiong Bao Yi, 14, were home when the fire broke out. Their parents had gone out for breakfast and returned shortly before 9am to find their house engulfed in flames. According to Oriental Daily, their mother, Lim Siew Lee, received a call from Lee Yi, who told her the house was on fire. Lim urged her daughter to escape with her younger sister, but the call ended after just 17 seconds. She was unsure whether Lee Yi had heard her instructions and could not reach her despite repeated attempts.
"The last time I heard my daughter’s voice was only 17 seconds. I will never hear her voice again," Lim told Oriental Daily. The girls' father, 50, said he and his wife tried to enter the burning house but were stopped by the intense heat and flames. He also attempted to force open a wooden door at the back of the house but failed. The girls' uncle rushed home from work and tried to rescue them but was unsuccessful, suffering burns in the attempt. Firefighters received an emergency call at 9:01am and arrived at 9:10am. The fire, which affected two adjoining double-storey houses, was brought under control at around 10:30am. The houses were nearly 90% destroyed, and several vehicles were also damaged in the blaze. The sisters were found in different parts of the house, one upstairs and the other downstairs. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
