@japdmedia26: CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES 🇺🇸 —The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has sent letters to California county election officials demanding a review of people the federal government suspects may not be U.S. citizens, according to reports published October 23, 2026. Officials were given 48 hours to determine the citizenship status of people on federal lists. The letters also requested that ballots from individuals whose citizenship could not be confirmed be set aside until their status was determined. Federal prosecutors warned that knowingly processing ballots cast by ineligible noncitizens could carry legal consequences. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli defended the action, writing: “California does not verify citizenship status. We did the work for them,” he wrote. “We obtained the registered voter list and told them who we believe are noncitizens on their rolls. “Knowingly processing noncitizen ballots is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. §§ 611 and 2,” he continued. “We will hold election officials accountable. No one is above the law.” The move follows a federal lawsuit filed against California over approximately 20,000 people whom the administration identified as potential noncitizen voters. California officials have challenged the federal government's approach, questioning the reliability of its information and warning that eligible voters could be affected if their ballots are withheld without proper verification. A review of a sample of 200 records by the Los Angeles County registrar found that many people were not active voters, while nearly 40% of the records indicated that the individuals were born in the United States. The dispute comes ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections and has intensified the legal battle between the Trump administration and California over election oversight. IMPORTANT: Federal suspicion alone does not prove that an individual is a noncitizen or has voted illegally. The dispute concerns how voter eligibility is verified and how potentially affected ballots should be handled. #California #USA #DOJ #ElectionNews #japd
