@nerdsip_merica: The Bayonne Bridge has linked Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey, since 1931. Its 151 feet of clearance became a problem once the Panama Canal was widened and container ships grew taller. Instead of tearing down the arch, the Port Authority kept it and built a new roadway 64 feet higher inside it. Work started in 2013. Lanes mostly closed only on nights and weekends, the new northbound deck opened in February 2017, the old deck was demolished by June 2017, and all four lanes plus a bike and walking path opened in February 2019. In September 2017 the CMA CGM T. Roosevelt, a 14,400-container ship, sailed under to celebrate. The image is an illustration, not a photo. Would you have kept the 1931 arch or built a new bridge?
