@johnhongkim: Did you know that sudden, intense episodes of déjà vu accompanied by a strange rising sensation in your stomach can sometimes be signs of a temporal lobe seizure? Temporal lobe seizures are a type of focal seizure that originates in the temporal region of the brain. Unlike the seizures most people imagine, they don’t always involve shaking or loss of consciousness. Symptoms may include: * Sudden, overwhelming déjà vu or unfamiliarity with familiar surroundings (jamais vu) * A strange rising sensation in the stomach * Unexplained fear or panic * Smelling odors that aren’t actually present, such as burning rubber * Unusual tastes * Brief episodes of staring, confusion, or repetitive movements These episodes may last seconds to a couple of minutes. Some people remain completely aware throughout the experience. Here’s what’s important: A routine EEG can be normal even in someone who has focal seizures, especially if no seizure occurs during the recording. Experiencing déjà vu doesn’t automatically mean you’re having seizures. However, if these episodes are recurrent, stereotyped, and accompanied by unusual sensations or altered awareness, they warrant neurological evaluation. Not every seizure looks like a seizure.
