Today, we are sharing Edward Nalwamba's story. Edward was a pastor of an Anglican Church with over 300 members and also an advocate for Uganda’s pro-democracy movement. Because of his political stances, the government targeted Edward, storming his house in the middle of the night and threatening him that if he tried to go to the airport and leave Uganda, he would never leave the airport again. Edward escaped Uganda in 2002. He spent years hiring lawyers to help him navigate the asylum process to no avail. The lawyers made mistakes in his application or just disappeared, stealing his money. This forced Edward to apply for asylum alone. His application and appeal would be denied. Judges failed to see the worsening human rights situation in Uganda, believing that Edward was not in immediate danger. Now in the United States as an undocumented immigrant, Edward believed he would be fine, considering that the administration promised to go after criminals, and he had no criminal record. Edward worked as a part-time pastor to bring money to his family and also as a health aide, taking care of a man with cerebral palsy and another person who was quadriplegic. While on his way to take care of them, he would be detained by ICE officers. Shortly after being detained, Edward would contract a very serious illness, leading to him having pneumonia for over 3 weeks. Even after repeated requests to seek professional intervention, the guards denied his requests until after 3 weeks. Edward became dependent on a wheelchair to move around because he was so weak and even lost 35 pounds. After being detained for over 13 months, Edward was finally released because the federal government had no concrete plan to deport him to Uganda, and he had stayed over 6 months in detention without a valid reason. Even after being released, the guards didn’t allow him to take the wheelchair so he could get to the vehicle that was picking him up, forcing 3 other detainees who were released to help carry him into the car. Edward’s immigration case remains unresolved. The sources that aided in creating this post come from the organizations The Washington Post, KCRA, and David Vanguard.
