Back in my day it was the penny test. God damn inflation.

The best thing to do is make letting off the gas your natural habit. I don’t hit my breaks until I have to, if I see anything I need to slow down for I just let off the gas most of the time I don’t even need to break.

I was on the highway during a big storm and was going 30-35 miles per hour. I don’t care if anyone wanted to go faster I was gonna get home safely.

Remember, coast!!! It means both slow down and water over land. Coast on the coast!

Similar when driving on icy roads; let off the gas or brake, steer where want to go, and drive slower. But most people forget how to drive when it first snows.

this braking advice also applies to sliding on icy patches as well.

Also be preemptive if you see a puddle or something let go of the gas before you even get there

Hitting the brakes is a poor choice a surprising amount of time when you’re issue is conditions rather than collision avoidance. On ice, in snow, on sand soft enough to need 4wd.

this is why I loved the slippery driving section of my licence in Sweden. full freedom to test how braking works without the risks of other traffic, buildings, or ditches.

If you want to make it muscle memory instead of theory, some driving schools will have a skid plate and car. This allows you practice under very safe conditions with an instructor. If you put it into a spin by accident the car will stop well before you hit anything or one.

Helps if you regularly drive on ice or snow. Builds the reflexive response you need.

popping your tire also feels like the same thing depending on make and model and even which tire popped, lost a tire in my datsun 720 was just fine, popped a tire in my corolla and spun out

I took an ice driving school in high-school. they taught us how to put our car into a slide so we could get comfortable doing it and learn to recover. I have argued with every tire tech that has tried to put my good tires on the back ever since. I can handle oversteer. it gets my heart going. but its manageable. understeer, though. there ain't shit you can do but pray you catch traction before you find the edge of the road.

I have always wondered about driving manual and starting to hydroplane. is it better to go to neutral or stay in the same gear and steer out?
