@instituteofhumananatomy: Your brain can bleed slowly for weeks before you notice. Here is why. Your brain is wrapped in three layers: the tough dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. An epidural hematoma is bleeding on top of the dura, between the dura and the skull. A subdural hematoma is bleeding below it, between the dura and the arachnoid. Subdural bleeds usually come from torn veins, often in older adults after mild head trauma. Because it is venous, it builds slowly and can cause headache, weakness, or seizures over days to weeks. Serious cases may still need drilling into the skull to relieve the pressure. Want anatomy at this depth? Our Foundations of Human Anatomy course breaks the whole body down. Link in bio. BodyDecoded 🧬 :
What makes chronic subdural hematomas particularly dangerous is that symptoms can mimic dementia or a stroke, especially in older adults. A seemingly minor head injury can have serious consequences weeks later. 🧠
