@joanna.dementia.e: Back when I was running my Memory Lane communities, I used to tell my friend Debra, our social worker, that my dream was to travel, speak, share everything I had learned, and help improve dementia care. At the time, it felt like this big dream somewhere in the future. Today, I realized I am living it. Every time I stand in front of a room, I get the opportunity to share what I know about creating a better life for people with dementia. I get to teach people how to listen differently. How to empathize. How to look beyond the behavior and ask what the person may actually be trying to communicate. How to get creative with care instead of forcing people through it. And sometimes, I get to sit with families and caregivers during some of the darkest moments of their lives and remind them that they are not alone. That part will never be lost on me. For years, I dreamed about doing this work on a bigger scale. Now I get to travel, speak, teach, encourage, and hopefully leave dementia care a little better than I found it.
