Infant sleepwear is one of the most regulated things you will ever buy for your baby. In the US that’s CPSIA and 16 CFR 1615/1616. In the UK it’s the Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 1985. In Australia it’s AS/NZS 1249. Every one of those rules exists because a baby sleeps in it and can’t tell you if something is wrong. Craft supplies live in a completely different world. The safety standards they’re held to are nowhere near as strict as the ones for infant sleepwear, because nobody expects a baby to sleep in them. ⚠️ Lead: the sleepwear limit is 90 ppm in any paint or coating. A Washington State lab measured the glitter on a kids’ pencil pouch at 614 ppm. A children’s finger paint set was recalled in the EU at 11,800 ppm. ⚠️ Phthalates: capped at 0.1% in anything made to help a child under 3 sleep. A kids’ paint set was pulled in the EU for DEHP at 0.45%, 4.5x the limit. ⚠️ Flammability: 3 seconds of open flame, char length under 7 inches, tested again after 50 washes. Glitter and tinsel are metallized PET film, the same material the FAA ordered off every aircraft in 2000 for flammability. ⚠️ Small parts and durability: scratched/twisted, then checked for anything that came off. Glitter sheds by design. Glue cracks and flakes. Not one of these would survive it, and every piece that comes off is a choking hazard. The shimmer in Sleep of Mind sleepwear is a permanent reflective print embedded into the fabric, third-party lab tested, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
