@muvalova: In November 2017, 24-year-old Sydney Loofe was looking for love when she matched with a woman on Tinder. Within days, Sydney would disappear, triggering a heartbreaking investigation that exposed a disturbing murder plot. Sydney lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she worked at a Menards hardware store. Friends described her as someone who wanted a meaningful relationship and was excited about meeting someone new. Sydney matched with Bailey Boswell, who reportedly used the name “Audrey” online. The two went on their first date on November 14, 2017, at an apartment in Wilber, Nebraska, where Boswell lived with her boyfriend, Aubrey Trail. They arranged a second date for November 15. Sydney never returned home. When she failed to show up for work the following morning, concern quickly grew. Her family requested a welfare check, and police discovered her car at home, her purse inside her apartment and her work clothes laid out for the next day. Her cat had also been left without food. Investigators soon realized her disappearance was suspicious. A friend helped investigators find the truth One of Sydney’s friends, Brooklyn McCrystal, took an extraordinary step to help find her. Knowing Sydney had met someone through Tinder, McCrystal created her own dating profile to try to reconnect with the woman Sydney had been seeing. She successfully matched with Boswell and obtained her phone number, which she passed along to investigators. That information helped police begin piecing together the identities and movements of the people Sydney had last been with. Investigators examined cellphone records, surveillance footage and other evidence. They also learned that the apartment where Sydney had been seen smelled strongly of bleach after her disappearance. Boswell and Trail initially denied responsibility and claimed they knew nothing about what had happened to Sydney. However, the evidence continued to mount. On December 4, 2017, investigators searching a rural area of Nebraska discovered human remains scattered along roadside areas. Sydney’s remains had been dismembered and placed in garbage bags. The discovery confirmed the worst fears of her family and friends. Investigators alleged that Boswell and Trail had planned to kill someone and that Sydney had been deliberately lured to their apartment. Evidence presented during the trials included testimony about the couple’s relationships with other women, their alleged violent fantasies and their discussions about killing. Trail gave multiple, conflicting accounts of Sydney’s death before admitting that he killed her. He claimed he feared she would expose their activities. Both defendants were ultimately convicted. A jury found Aubrey Trail guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and improper disposal of human remains in 2019. He was sentenced to death in 2021. Bailey Boswell was convicted of the same offenses in 2020 and sentenced to life in prison, along with additional consecutive prison terms. In May 2024, the Nebraska Supreme Court upheld her convictions and sentence. The case has recently returned to public attention through the Hulu documentary Swipe Right on the Devil, which revisits Sydney’s disappearance, the investigation and testimony concerning the couple’s relationships with other women. Sydney was only 24 years old. She had a family, friends and a future ahead of her. She went on a date expecting to meet someone new, never knowing that the encounter would become the last time anyone would see her alive. Her murder remains a chilling reminder that people may not always be who they claim to be online. But Sydney’s story is also one of determination: a friend refused to give up, investigators followed the evidence, and those responsible were brought before the courts. #SydneyLoofe #TrueCrime
