@justinschumanofficial: i’ve heard some version of this a thousand times from people i’ve worked with over the last five years. which is entirely unsurprising. i tend to attract people who’ve spent their lives believing they’re “too much.” too enthusiastic. too emotional. too intense. too invested. too demonstrative. because, hi helloooo. i’m one of them. the irony is that the very qualities we’ve been encouraged to tone down are often the ones that make us so extraordinary at showing up for other people. today, a friend inadvertently helped me catch myself doing something i still struggle with and slip into without even noticing. when i want to be chosen, i try to make myself NEEDED. i don’t get quiet anymore. i get useful. i become so invested in supporting, championing, uplifting, and seeing the people around me that sometimes i forget i’m also allowed to take up space just by EXISTING. no extra-special value add necessary. i’m plenty valuable already. kinda wild to be so good at making other people feel enormous when you’ve spent so much of your own life being told to be smaller. i know people have different ways of showing love. different capacities for enthusiasm. different ways of showing up. and that’s incredibly okay. for real. but when you walk through the world with a deep-ass emotional well and the capacity to withstand incredibly high emotional temperatures, the world around you can sometimes feel just a bit cool for your liking.
