Quebec Liberal Leader Charles Milliard said Monday that his party will work with the incoming Parti Québécois government on issues affecting the province, but will not collaborate on a potential referendum on Quebec independence. Milliard told supporters that the Liberals had presented a clear vision focused on public finances, housing, education and health care. The party campaigned under the slogan “Rassembler. Réparer. Bâtir.” — “Unite. Repair. Build.” “Now instead of 18 MNAs, there are 40 of us,” Milliard said, referring to the Liberal caucus. He said voters had elected a National Assembly without a majority, meaning the PQ government would have to consider proposals from other parties. Milliard said the Liberals would review proposals put forward by the PQ and assess whether they are in Quebec’s best interests. But he drew a clear distinction when it came to the PQ’s plans for a referendum on independence. “Preparing your referendum will find you facing a clear opponent in the Liberal Party,” Milliard said. Switching to English, he added: “There is no way we will collaborate on a potential referendum.” The comments position the Liberals as willing to cooperate with the new government on issues such as health care, education, housing and public finances while opposing a referendum on Quebec sovereignty. The party’s stated campaign priorities included housing construction, support for small businesses and expanded access to telehealth.
