@chicagolandfirehistory: On this day in history 10/24/2006: CFD ran a 5-11 Alarm in South loop (southern area of downtown) Companies were stilled out to a report of a fire in a 6 story building. Upon arrival, they had smoke coming from the 5th and 6th floor. The 5th floor was under renovation at the time and access was cut off. Firefighters had a hard time gaining access to the 5th floor and ultimately had to use the fire escape on the rear of the building. By the point they made access, fire had taken over the top 2 floors and was raging out of control. Tower ladders were brought to the front to get access and hit the fire from the outside. The fire made its way down to the 4th floor and was raging out of control. A Tower ladder was brought to the rear but they were still having trouble containing fire. One factor that helped was Aerial Tower 1 was the first due truck and has a master stream on it. In total, 5 tower ladders were called to the scene in additinon to having Aerial Tower 1 and 2 Deluge Wagons on the scene. When Engine 13 arrived, they deck gunned the fire from the front and Engine 19 deck gunned the fire from the rear. They had 2 towers in the front, 2 in the back, and one on the side street alongside 6-7-1 in the rear, and 6-7-3 on the front. The firefight took multiple hours and the building ended up being demolished in the following days after the fire was put out. One thing to note is this either during or right before CFD started transitioning out of the hip boots and long coats into the modern day bunker gear as seen in the photos. Photos from the scene taken by Gordon J Nord and Tim Olk.
