Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are known for their innovative hunting techniques, and one of the most unusual methods involves using shells as "traps" for fish. This technique, called "shelling", has been observed in some dolphin populations and may also be used to catch oilfish. How Does It Work? Finding a Shell The dolphin searches for an empty seashell large enough to trap a fish inside. Herding the Prey Using agility and echolocation, the dolphin drives the oilfish into the shell, blocking its escape routes. Lifting the Shell Once the fish is inside, the dolphin carefully picks up the shell with the tip of its rostrum and brings it to the surface. Shaking the Fish Out Upon reaching the surface, the dolphin quickly shakes or flips the shell, causing the trapped fish to slip out—right into its mouth. Why Is It Effective? Oilfish, like many other fish, instinctively hide in shelters, and the dolphin takes advantage of this behavior. This method allows dolphins to hunt even in situations where fish are difficult to catch in open water. It saves energy since it doesn’t require long chases. This fascinating example of tool use showcases the high intelligence of bottlenose dolphins and their ability to adapt their hunting strategies! 🐬🔥 #dolphins #bottlenosedolphin #ocean #viral_video #hunt#biology #fyp
