idk if Karthik is a good guy or not...but he did say they only knew half truths. Ju Li evacuating the city to allow Korea to try and close it seems logical. and what if, Korra tried to close it, but couldn't? Hence the cataclysm. I think even for Korra, that much energy would likely be too much for her to control.

Given the great story they're telling Korra did have an alternative. She could have gone into the spirit world and closed it from that side like Wan did after Harmonic Convergence. But I'm perfectly fine with how she did it. 😁

The only thing I’m confused about is how destroying republic city became the world. Something more happened. And it’s obvious that it did. I made a theory the spirits caused the mortal storm bc humans were abusing their powers so they decided like they need to be punished. And Korra problably went into the spirit world to stop them neglecting the human world and they believed she caused it when it was their own decisions. Also it’s known she reshaped the entire world probably bc the work with spirit energy ruined the balance of the world so she reshaped it to fix it.

she was previously wearing a betrothal necklace, when she's rampaging she doesn't have it. we see two cars fleeing the scene, one of them crashes and explodes. she was angry for a reason, possibly uncontrollably so.

So my theory about the war being a key factor is partially right - if Republic City wasn't founded (it was Fire Nation colony on Earth Kingdom soil) then Kuvira wouldn't have tried reclaiming it using spirit energy, which led to the massive spirit portal, which wasn't necessarily Korra's fault, she tried to save her enemy, to restore balance. So if the spiritual energy from that time when Kuvira was defeated was used and it led to the cataclysm, the Hundred Year War led to it, so in retrospect, the Fire Nation destroyed the world. I know it was Korra's choice to keep the portal open, it's just that I sincerely doubt she believed something like that could happen.

i love that they’re keeping it nuanced and aren’t making korra completely right or wrong, and are also making humanity unjustified… saying that as a MAJOR korra defender, it really compliments her character. i think the portals will remain open and it’ll end up working out, because claiming that humans and spirits SHOULD remain separate would send out a horrible message. (plus for 10,000 years they DID remain separate and things were only getting worse).
