@cityramble: New Yorkers called it Hughes' Folly — a giant cathedral in the middle of nowhere. ⛪ They were wrong. Archbishop Hughes laid the cornerstone in 1858, in open fields miles north of the city. The Civil War stopped construction, but it finally opened on May 25, 1879 — and the twin spires, finished in 1888, were the tallest things in New York. Step inside for the marble, the gold, and a ceiling that comes alive with light. Walk right in at 631 Fifth Avenue, between 50th and 51st. #StPatricksCathedral #NYCHistory #NewYork #gothicarchitecture
