As a kid we had a pig that lived with our pack of dogs (we had a farm people often dumped all kinds of animals on) he would sleep with them, eat with them (specifically dog food), patrol with them. He genuinely thought he was just a short dog. Well, years pass, that pack slowly dwindles and new dogs come in, and one day we get a retired champion show dog that was done studding and was meant to retire and live out his days with us. Kind of cool, we took in all kinds of retired work animals, but not a doggy celebrity (and he was the Seabiscuit of his breed at the time.) Anyway, we have been doing small exposures to the property and the other animals so it builds an association with the space and doesn't make the animal overwhelmed or just run off. And one day... the dog gets out. Now this breed was made for hunting, and hunting BIG animals, so my parents are FREAKING out when they find dog at one end of the pasture staring down old pig at the other. My mom says EVERYTHING was slow motion as the dog ran and DOVE at this pig. But then he just... stops. And he smells the pig and the pig smells him, and then... the pig just starts going to one of the barn stalls, and the dog follows. These two become INSEPARABLE. They claim a stall for themselves, they lay in the sun together, when the pack patrols it's always show dog and pig at the rear going 1/8 the pace this dog could be going. They were the closest thing you could call soul mates for two creatures without a concept of the word. Well, unfortunately, pig was much older than dog so pig passes. Dog is heartbroken. He stops laying in their sun spot, eats in a different part of the barn. And he never once set foot back in that stall. The dog stuck around a few more years, but he never had the same bounce in his step as when he lost his best friend, the weird old barn pig that never knew he wasn't a dog himself.
