Training under pressure. As a Resident Athlete at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, one of the drills we do involves running to the target and back before immediately shooting. The purpose of this drill is to practice executing a shot while dealing with the discomfort of heavy breathing, an elevated heart rate, and physical fatigue. Learning to manage these factors is important when it comes to performing under pressure in competition. In this video, you can see my heart rate begin to drop as I settle into my aiming process. Despite the physical stress from running, I’m able to slow things down, regain control of my breathing, and focus on executing a confident shot. It’s a reminder that being able to perform under pressure isn’t just about physical ability, but also learning to stay composed when your body is telling you otherwise.
