They also scream "Stop talking about the past, get over it" yet it was only in the 1960's that indigenous peoples could vote, they were also having their children ripped away from them. IT WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO!! Literally our parents/grandparents generation.

I hear the point about connection to land. I think Indigenous history should be recognised. I also believe people from many backgrounds can belong here if they come lawfully. I’m trying to hold both truths without dismissing anyone

You nailed it! Good on you. I appreciate the rationale you use to derail the racist thinking. I’m Canadian - not do different from your experience.

I don’t think that’s the strongest argument. Throughout history, land has been conquered, occupied and settled by different groups. That’s how much of the world’s borders and nations came to exist, rarely peacefully. If land could only ever belong to whoever occupied it first, we’d have to question the legitimacy of countless countries worldwide.
That doesn’t excuse the injustices of colonisation or diminish Aboriginal people’s history, culture and connection to the land. But acknowledging that history doesn’t invalidate modern Australia, which has developed over generations into a democratic society with established laws, infrastructure, healthcare, education and individual freedoms.
We can acknowledge the past, respect First Nations heritage and recognise modern Australia as a country shared by all its citizens. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.

You do realise that even aboriginal people cane from africa, before the Europeans granted.
