There is a huge difference between helping a family member who has fallen on hard times and being completely taken advantage of inside your own home. 🙅‍♀️ My 21-year-old stepdaughter recently broke the news that she is pregnant. As a family, our initial reaction was to offer emotional support, listen to her plans, and see how she intended to handle this life-altering transition. She is currently in college, living partially on our dime, and trying to navigate early adulthood. However, when we sat down to discuss the logistics of where the baby would sleep, how child care would work, and what her routine would look like, she laid out an expectation that made my jaw hit the floor. She calmly explained that because she still has several semesters left of school, she expects me to take on the day-to-day responsibilities of raising the infant. She assumed I would handle feeding schedules, diaper changes, doctor appointments, and nighttime wake-ups during the week so she can focus on studying—and then watch the baby on weekends so she can still hang out with her friends, attend parties, and maintain her social life. In her mind, she gets the title of mother, but none of the actual sacrifice. I immediately shut it down and said there was zero chance I was going to raise a third generation when my own parenting chapter is supposed to be winding down. That was when my husband stepped in and made things a million times worse. Instead of backing me up or having an honest conversation with his adult daughter about personal accountability, he turned on me. He accused me of being cold-hearted, lacking maternal instinct, and failing as a stepmother. He told me flat out that

He accused me of being cold-hearted, lacking maternal instinct, and failing as a stepmother. He told me flat out that "as family, it is our duty to step up," insisting that we owe it to her to take the burden off her shoulders so her youth isn't ruined. I looked at him and reminded him that she is an adult who made an adult choice, and while he is welcome to wake up at 3:00 AM and give up his weekends, he does not get to volunteer my unpaid labor. Now the household is walking on eggshells. She is crying, calling me unsupportive, and my husband is giving me the silent treatment like I’m an evil monster for drawing a hard line. Am I wrong for refusing to become a built-in nanny for a mother who doesn't want to parent? Drop your thoughts below… How would you handle this dynamic? 👇🍼 #StepparentProblems #FamilyBoundaries #EntitledFamily #MotherhoodReality #MarriageDrama
