Meet Gino. 💔 ⏰ DEADLINE: OCTOBER 18 GINO A5172502 is a handsome 3 year old Rottweiler who might look like a big tough guy, but his shelter notes tell a much different story! Gino was found wandering near a wastewater treatment plant in Tolleson. When a woman pulled up and offered him some water, he came right over, hopped into her vehicle, and happily accepted pets all over. And he’s been showing off that sweet side at the shelter, too! 🥹 Staff describe Gino as having a soft, wiggly body, a constantly wagging little tail nub, and a serious LOVE for affection. He follows handlers around, leans into pets, gently accepts treats, and has walked past other dogs without reacting. But Gino has one little problem. Sometimes all that excitement turns into TOO MUCH excitement. During one evaluation, he became overstimulated while receiving attention, jumped up, and started mounting his handler. Although staff redirected him, his increasing over arousal has landed him on the euthanasia list. And unfortunately, Gino isn’t just struggling behaviorally. He’s also pretty sick… He’s being treated for a respiratory infection, but has developed recurring nosebleeds, nasal discharge, sneezing, and a poor appetite. Staff have found blood throughout his kennel, and his latest exam noted blood mixed with regurgitated food. He’s receiving antibiotics, fluids, and monitoring in isolation. His heartworm and tick borne disease screening was negative, but the cause of his nosebleeds hasn’t been confirmed. He’s also too sick to be neutered right now, so his rescue will need to arrange that once he’s medically cleared. On October 12, despite being sick and undergoing bloodwork and fluid treatments, staff wrote that Gino “maintained a soft wiggly demeanor throughout interaction with all handlers.” Even while feeling miserable, this big guy was still leaning into pets. Gino needs an experienced, committed foster and a New Hope rescue prepared to manage his medical and behavioral needs. He’s only three years old.
