@occonews: An argument over a door held open—and a “thank you” that never came—ended with a mother’s death. CBS now reports that Keona Zachyua Hampton has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the fatal 2025 shooting outside a Dallas PetSmart. The victim was 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson, known to her family as “CeeCee.” According to police and court documents, Simpson held the door for Hampton, then 22, at a Five Below store on October 7, 2025. When Hampton did not thank her, the two began arguing. The confrontation continued beyond the doorway. Court documents say Simpson and a companion drove to a nearby PetSmart in the same shopping center, while Hampton walked toward the store. Inside, Simpson told employees that she was being followed. Hampton entered and argued with Simpson’s companion, left, then returned and continued arguing with Simpson. Employees eventually asked those involved to leave. The encounter then turned physical. According to a witness account in court documents, Hampton threw a drink bottle at their vehicle as Simpson and her companion were getting in. Simpson approached Hampton, and their argument escalated into a fight. The companion told investigators that she intervened to help Simpson and struck Hampton several times. Hampton then drew a handgun and fired three shots at Simpson. Simpson died at a hospital. Hampton left the scene and was located and arrested later that day. The latest report confirms a 30-year prison sentence. The distinction matters: Simpson was not killed because she failed to say thank you. According to the police account and court documents, Simpson held the door, and Hampton did not thank her. The shooting followed a series of confrontations, alleged following, a thrown bottle and a physical fight. Speaking after the shooting in 2025, Simpson’s mother, Leslie Wickware, described losing her daughter as “a bad dream that I can never wake up from.” Simpson’s son, Derion Williams, then 16, asked: “Why did she have to follow my mom?” The family said Simpson’s daughter was also present and witnessed the shooting. Her relatives wanted her remembered for more than how she died. “Outside of this tragedy, she was a person who had a family, who was a mother, a daughter, a sister who will miss her,” said Simpson’s sister, Monica Nelson.
