I would be more upset if my partner got me a blood Diamond rather than a lab grown one

There are ethically sourced diamonds these days. You just need to research a little bit. Also second hand diamonds are a great way to get a mined diamond if that’s what you want.

Like she knows they come in all sizes right? Like she can get a 2 or 3 carat and no one would know.

Havilah Fine Jewelry has a very interesting video about how the rise of lab-grown stones came about during the same time as the people of Africa taking back their resources. To assume all natural stones are blood diamonds is problematic. Additionally, the machines that make the hardest known substance in the universe cannot be ecological wonders, and they also have materials in them like cobalt which are rife with conflict as well and cannot be created in a lab. We don’t always know the working conditions in these labs either. I’m not saying don’t get lab stones. I’m typing this on an iPhone, I’m not claiming to be a sustainability warrior here. But I encourage people to consider if they are falling for greenwashing. I also encourage people to consider vintage jewelry if they really want to be sustainable and ethical.

Lab diamonds can also be unethical. You think they make them in labs in a rainbow on the swiss alps or in sweatshops in developing countries? There is no shame in buying a lab diamond and being financially responsible. But don’t justify it as the “ethical” option.

Okay, but why not just get a vintage diamond? 🤔 I mean the diamond is already there. Yes, the manner in which it got there may be questionable, but it’s there. Utilising the diamonds that are already in the market means nobody else has to go into the ground and mine them, AND nobody has to work in a dodgy factory to manufacture it

I’m a history major so I got an antique cushion cut natural. I liked the idea of it forming in the earth for millions of years. I love labs and have a couple though! I love that labs allow people to get their absolute dream ring.

Ethical concerns aside, I just do not get the idea of having a preference. If I LOVED the look of a giant solitaire, and could only afford it in a lab grown, get what you love! if you find a gorgeous set in a store that is mined, buy that. this idea that the source of the diamond is any way more significant that the shape/size/look is what I cannot get my mind around. I have a mined diamond and I have never once felt that it was superior or different than another ring

Not the whole industry getting painted with one brush 😭 Plenty of natural diamonds come from regulated mines that employ thousands of people, often paying above the local average. As far as I know, anyway

I mean what she said was she wanted her partner to save up for the ring which is also very tone deaf because engagement rings with lab grown stones are still costing 1000+, often several thousand, which is a lot for the average person.

i would refuse a proposal if it was with a mined dimond, not a single good reason to get mined from human exploitation to environmental degradation to just a waste of money

The people with such opinions are the same people who don’t know how and by whom diamonds are mined

People are so stupid 😂 She wants the boyfriend to spend a lot of money because she thinks that adds value to HER As someone who has both, yes they literally are the same thing. Actually you're likely to get better looking stones in a lab since the process is 100% controlled and you can get the best color and clarity
