WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL MY VOTE MAKE? Election Series | Part 2 | Ml Sulaimaan Ravat With repeated political failures, corruption, broken promises and deteriorating service delivery, many South Africans are questioning whether voting makes any difference. Adding to the frustration is coalition politics. People vote for one party, only to find that it later joins forces with parties they may never have wanted to support. 1. What happens if we don't vote? We often ask what difference voting will make. But perhaps we should also ask: What will change if we don't vote? Elections will still take place, governments will still be formed, and decisions affecting our lives will still be made. Withdrawing from the ballot does not mean withdrawing from the consequences of the ballot. 2. Imperfect does not mean identical No political party is perfect. Each has its strengths, weaknesses and shortcomings. Some may perform better on service delivery but fall short elsewhere. Others may have appealing policies but a poor record of implementation. The fact that all parties have shortcomings does not mean they are equally bad or that their impact will be the same. 3. Sometimes the objective is to prevent greater harm We may not always have an ideal party or candidate to support. But meaningful differences between the available options still matter. Sometimes the concern extends beyond service delivery to parties' positions on justice, human rights and international issues. Sometimes voting is not about getting everything we want, but about preventing things from becoming even worse. 4. Make informed choices, not emotional decisions Look beyond slogans and party loyalties. Examine policies, track records and performance, including how parties approach coalitions, whom they are willing to govern with, and what compromises they make. Coalitions can also give smaller parties a greater say in government than their size might otherwise suggest. The UUCSA Political Party Report Card is one resource to assist the community Seek advice, engage in mashwarah (consultation) and make istikhārah, seeking Allah's guidance. 5. Difficult choices should not lead to disengagement When every option has shortcomings, it is tempting to give up on the political process. But difficult does not mean impossible. We are not an Ummah of quitters. Disappointment should not lead to helplessness. We need to consider what meaningful contribution we can make, even in difficult circumstances.
